From 7th to 9th September, 2018, with the strong support of relevant departments, the registration of international students and the orientation was successfully completed. The University admitted more than 50 students from over 20 countries.
The newly admitted students took through a one-week orientation, including attending lectures from the International Education College (International Student Management Office), the Security and Safeguard Department, and the Library Department.
During the lectures, the teachers of the International Education College (IEC) gave detailed introduction and explanations to the freshmen on the history of the University, rules and regulations, studying instructions, and extra-curriculum activities. Also, some outstanding current students were invited to share their experience with the new students about studying conditions, cultural shocks and some useful tips.
Furthermore, students were taking through Chinese criminal law and jurisdictions that foreign students are to observe and adhere to during their studying period. More so, the freshmen were educated on illegal conducts that is prohibited by law in China, such as the possession of illegal arms, prohibited drugs, working illegally without the required immigration permits, driving without a licence as a foreigner, and many others. By listing typical cases, the teachers help students to improve their safety awareness.
In addition, the teachers of the Library Department also took them through the overview of the library resources. Useful advice on how to search for paper and electronic resources, library-related services and training were also taught during the student’s orientation, so as to help them use the available learning materials at their own advantage in achieving their aim of coming to SMU. Moreover, the teachers also mentioned that to facilitate the students to make good use of the resources of our library conveniently, the English version user guide was prepared for foreign students.
The orientation activity helped students to integrate well into the University community with anticipation and zeal for their future goals and aspirations as well as to feel being part of SMU, the great family.
