The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) was established in 1996 and is affiliated to International Education College (IEC) of Shanghai Maritime University, as an important part of our international education. After many years of development, the center has developed into a Chinese teaching and training institutions with complete structure of teachers, complete curriculum, covering Chinese language courses, Chinese proficiency examination tutoring and Chinese traditional culture series of courses in Pudong area and even Shanghai. At present, the center provides more than 500 international students and foreigners with various academic qualifications, non-academic education in Chinese, HSK examination guidance and examination services.
Centre Qualifications and Major Business
In the early 1960s, according to the unified arrangement of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communications, our school began to accept international students and form the embryo of the Center for Chinese Studies. In 1996, the center was re-applied for admission of self-funded students and Chinese as a foreign language teaching qualifications. In 2005, our university was admitted to the first batch of foreign students with Shanghai Government Scholarship. In 2012, the International Education College was approved to accept international students with Chinese Government Scholarship.
In December 2013, the Center for Chinese Studies came in Dongming Road Campus. By 2013, the Centre had been allowed to become a testing point for the Chinese proficiency test (HSK) certified by the Confucius Institute (Hanban) which is one of the few testing point in university campuses in Pudong District.
Courses
With the aim of high efficiency and high quality , the center adheres to small-class teaching , pays attention to the interaction between teachers and students, and adopts immersive Chinese teaching method, which has been widely recognized and praised by foreign students.
The Centre offers a multi-level and multi-category Chinese language courses, which includes nearly 10 compulsory Chinese courses, such as Public Chinese , Chinese Reading , Chinese Listening and Speaking , Intermediate Chinese Translation , Scientific and Technological Literature Reading , Chinese Traditional Culture and Modern Chinese Culture. The Center also offers various short-term elective courses, such as General Situation of China , China's National Conditions , Chinese Language and Culture , Chinese Calligraphy and Painting , etc. For non-degree students, there are long-term five-days class, long-term three-days class, short-term accelerated Chinese class, HSK tutoring, business Chinese class, summer short training class and other language skills courses, and cultural elective courses, such as Chinese Wushu , Paper-cut , Chinese Culture , Tourism Chinese and other.
Faculty Overview
The center has a strong professional, experienced, teaching and research combined, full-time and part-time combined team of teachers. There are 8 full-time teachers including four associate professors, an assistant professor, three lecturers, and two of them have doctoral degree while six have master degree. At the same time, the center hires a number of experienced and professional part-time teachers with outstanding teaching abilities.
In addition to teaching in the classroom, the full-time teachers actively sum up their practical teaching experiences, carry out maritime education, maritime technology and Chinese language teaching and research work, publish a number of academic works and articles in important journals on maritime education and Chinese language education.
Student activities and practical teaching
The center offers special elective courses such as martial arts, calligraphy, art and so on. It also organizes international cultural exchange festival, dragon boat race, Chinese recitation, writing competition, photography competition, Chinese corner and so on.
Taking advantage of the convenience of the center in the urban area, students are organized to participate in all kinds of exchange activities and competitions organized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the Shanghai Univeristy Foreign Student Education Association, and the fraternal colleges and universities. The center organizes Chinese cultural experience activities,such as going to museums, Zhouzhuang, Zhujiajiao, Kunshan, Nanjing, Beijing and other areas to carry out Chinese teaching practice activities.
Significant impacts
In the past 40 years of reform and opening up, Pudong New area has become the first choice for foreigners to come to Shanghai to study, work and live. The Center for Chinese Studies in Shanghai Maritime University deeply attracted all kinds of foreign students and foreigners with authoritative curriculum, professional teaching team, excellent teaching facilities, rich campus culture atmosphere and convenient geographical location.
Through the leaning of Chinese, the students' good language ability and cross-cultural communication ability can not only provide great convenience for them to work and live in China, but also cultivate their love for Chinese society and culture, and enhance their sense of integration and identity. The development of Chinese language will play an active and important role in promoting Pudong area to become a livable area for foreigners and enhancing its internationalization.
