Serial cultural activities of “Perceiving China – Shipping and You”, sponsored by the China Scholarship Council, organized by Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai University, and Shanghai Ocean University successfully took place from 13 to 14 October. More than 100 international students from nearly 50 countries who have received Chinese government scholarship participated in the event.
At SMU, international students attended the lecture by Mr. Zhang Lin, deputy director of the Transportation Committee of Shanghai on the development history of shipping industry in Shanghai, the construction of Shanghai as a international shipping center, the opportunities and challenges of shipping, and the prospects of shipping.
The international students visited China Maritime Museum, the largest and highest-level comprehensive maritime museum in China. Following the guide, the international students visited various exhibition halls, got a hands-on experience of the virtual shipbuilding technology, learned to make sailor knots and the splendid navigation culture of China.
At the Yangshan Maritime Administration, staffs introduced to the students about the functions of the Yangshan VTS, VTS equipment, radar station distribution, working environment and other aspects.
With the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center and the promotion of the city’s overall planning, the function of the Shanghai Port Cruise Terminal has undergone great changes and the current Shanghai International Passenger Transport Center was established on the original site. With the instruction of the staff, the students visited their dock culture exhibition corridor, the National Tourists Center building complex, the music gate and other areas, having thorough understanding of the history and status quo of China’s cruise industry.
In COSCO Shipping, under the guidance of experts, the international students listened to the introduction, visited the ship model exhibition, working area, viewing platform and other areas. At the same time, students had in-depth exchanges and interactions with experts on issues they were interested.
The activities aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the world and China’s shipping to the international students, highlighting the achievements made by Chinese shipping industry in its soft and hard environment construction, shipping management and technology innovation, shipping service upgrading, and shipping cooperation with “Belt and Road” countries, as well as strengthening humanity exchanges in the field of shipping.
