On the afternoon of December 13th, at the invitation of the International Education College (IEC), Mr. Edmund Hughes, director of the Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency Department of International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations, gave a lecture on “IMO and its role in reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in international shipping” for SMU teachers and students at the administrative building.
Mr. Edmund Hughes has long been engaged in research of marine pollution prevention and control and technology innovation for reduction of GHG emissions from ships .
In this lecture, Mr. Edmund Hughes introduced the institutional composition, operational rules and functions of IMO, and explained the latest implementation requirements of the MARPOL Convention (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships). He focused on the relationship between global climate change and management of emission control from ships employed in international shipping.
In the interaction session, the audiences raised many questions and Mr. Edmund Hughes provided detailed answers.
