On the morning of the 4th Mar., Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) held the grand opening ceremony of 2019 Spring semester for overseas students at COSCO lecture hall. Prof. Xin Shi, Vice President of SMU, Prof. Wei Ruan, Dean of International Education College (IEC), heads and faculty representatives of Merchant Marine College, College of Transport and Communications, College of Ocean Science and Engineering and over 90 overseas students attended the opening ceremony. Prof. Wei Ruan, Dean of IEC presided over the ceremony.
Prof. Xin Shi, Vice President of SMU, delivered a welcome speech. He extended a warm welcome to the overseas students who come from afar and choose SMU to achieve their aspirations. He spoke highly of the outstanding achievements made by SMU in the recent years in the aspects of discipline construction and external exchanges. He hoped that during their stay in SMU the overseas students not only immerse themselves in the ocean of professional knowledge but can also enjoy the exposure to the splendid Chinese culture with time-honored history.
On behalf of all teachers, Dr. Fang Yin from College of Ocean Science and Engineering gave a speech. He stated that it was understandable that students are far from hometown and might feel difficult to accommodate the new place at the beginning. However, he believed that the SMU teachers would spare no effort to help them with their study and the Chinese students would also support them to fit in school life as soon as possible.
As a student representative, Misoayn from Georgia shared his feelings, saying he was looking forward to the new life in the next three months and would try to make the most of his time in China.
The overseas students attending the opening ceremony were mainly students of the International Class Exchange Program and of the Training Course of MSK Denmark. They came from over 10 countries, including the United States, Denmark, South Korea, Russia, Georgia, Romania, and so on.
