Dragon Head Raising Day, the traditional folk festival celebrated on the second day of the 2nd month of the Chinese lunar calendar fell on March 8 (Friday) this year, when SMU’s international students took part in the “8th Chong Ming District Long Tai Tou (Dragon Head Raising Day) Cultural Tourism Festival” at Sanmin Cultural Village in Chong Ming District. The purpose of the activity is to enrich overseas students understanding of Chinese traditional folk culture.

Upon their arrival at Sanmin Cultural Village, our students were warmly welcomed and they joined at once the imitation performance of “Zhu Bajie (a famous Chinese novel character called Pigsy in “the Journey to the West” story) carrying his wife,” and the ”Chinese God of wealth”. The joyful atmosphere created a positive interaction between international students and local residents. Our students later visited the ancient architectures, on which the traditional Chinese paintings were greatly admired for their vividness

To climax the event, SMU overseas students performed a well-prepared dance, inviting the leaders of Chong Ming Island and residents to dance with them, which won warm applause from the audience.

The cultural tourism activity was held by Sanmin Culture and Art Center of Zhongming District and supported and directed by Chongming District Cultural Broadcasting and Television Administration, Chongming Tourism Bureau, and  Chongming District Agriculture Committee, etc. Through the activity, SMU overseas students were immersed in Chinese traditional culture and deepened their friendship as well.
