With the joint efforts of International Education College (IEC) and relevant colleges and departments, the registration of 2019 international students was successfully completed.
After registration, the newly admitted students were taking through the first round orientation activities, which comprises lectures from International Student Management Office of IEC, the Security and Safety Department, and the Library Department. The lectures provided students with information on the use of the library, dormitory management, studying instructions. Campus tour and culture experience was arranged as well.
Teachers of IEC gave detailed introduction and explanations to the freshmen on the history and development of the university, rules and regulations. Outstanding current students were invited to share their experience with the new students about studying conditions, cultural shocks and some useful tips. Different colleges held the welcome meetings in various forms, in which they introduced the general situation of the colleges, specializations, the management of studying and living in detail. The teacher of the Library Department, giving an overview of SMU library, provided useful advice on how to search for paper and electronic resources, library-related services and training. Then, the dormitory manager showed the overall conditions of the dormitory and explained the dorm rules and regulations. Teacher representatives of different colleges made detailed interpretation on the study plans of different specializations and introduced the academic requirements on dissertation of undergraduate and postgraduate students. In the end, all the international students made a visit to the China Maritime Museum and Yangshan Deep-Water Port.
The orientation activity helped students to integrate well into the new environment with anticipation for their future goals and to feel being part of SMU, the great family.
