The 2021 Shanghai Summer School (Africa Project) implemented by Shanghai Maritime University successfully opened on the afternoon of June 15th. Prof. RUAN Wei, Dean of the International Education College (IEC) of SMU, Ms. HU Fangfang, Director of the Administration Office of IEC, representatives of management team, Chinese students working as program assistant attended the online opening ceremony to greet and welcome all international participants of the project.

In his address, Prof. Ruan warmly welcomed all students for choosing the program organized by SMU. He made a brief introduction about SMU, highlighting achievements made by SMU in its  academic discipline development and internationalization. He hoped that participants could overcome the inconvenience of online study, and make good use of the opportunity to learn more about Chinas history, Chinese culture and the development of Chinas shipping industry.

The project management team introduced the curriculum arrangement of the whole project to the students. Affected by the epidemic, this summer program would be implemented online. In addition to lectures on Chinese language and Chinese culture, online cultural experience and visits will also be offered to help African students understand SMU, Shanghai and China in a better way.

Mr. Mustafa Ismail from Egypt spoke on behalf of all summer school students. He said that he was very interested in Chinese culture and hoped that he could have an in-depth understanding of Chinese culture and have a comprehensive understanding of SMU and the development of China through after attending the project.

This one-month training program is sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, aiming at helping African students to learn more about Chinese culture and China's development. International Education College of SMU will also introduce Chinese shipping culture and marine culture to the international students of summer school, so as to promote the cultural exchanges of international shipping.
