Perceiving China – Maritime and Me

On November 25th, Shanghai Maritime University hosted the Perceiving China Maritime and Me activity sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Nearly 40 international students from 19 countries, including Italy, Belgium, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Ghana, Togo, Egypt, Rwanda, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Morocco, Mongolia, Ukraine, Russia, etc., who were awarded scholarships by the Chinese government or the Shanghai Municipal Government, participated in the event.

 

Organized by the China Scholarship Council and hosted by Shanghai Maritime University, the event aimed to showcase China's achievements in the construction of soft and hard environments for maritime affairs and shipping, management technologies and services, as well as maritime cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road, and to strengthen humanistic exchanges in the field of maritime affairs and shipping.

 

In the morning, international students gathered in the conference room of Hai Xun 01 to listen to Captain Zhang Peng's captivating presentation on Search and Rescue and Emergency Response. The presentation covered fundamental skills in search and rescue, emergency response to maritime incidents, and the requirements for commanding at the scene of a search and rescue operation. Captain Zhang highlighted China's outstanding capabilities and performance in the field through detailed case studies, including the emergency response to the fire on the Chaoji Taiyang cruise ship, the search and rescue operation for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, the search and rescue operation for the fishing vessel Ji Ren Yu 00791, the search and rescue operation for the fishing vessel Su Gan Yu Yun 02886, as well as emergency response actions for the vessels Sangi and Longqing 1. Following the presentation, the international students, led by Captain Zhang and his colleagues on Hai Xun 01, had the opportunity to tour the deck, bridge, living quarters, and observation platform, gaining a close-up understanding of China's first large-scale cruise rescue ship equipped with both maritime regulatory and rescue functions.

 

In the afternoon, international students visited the China Maritime Museum. As the first national maritime museum jointly established by the Ministry of Transport of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the China Maritime Museum focuses on the theme of Navigation with a foundation in Museums. It is divided into six exhibition halls: Maritime History, Ships, Navigation and Ports, Maritime and Sea Safety, Seafarers, and Military Navigation. The museum boasts a collection of over 20,000 artifacts, serving various functions such as cultural relic preservation, academic research, social education, and exhibition displays. Guided by museum interpreters, the international students enthusiastically explored each exhibition hall. They immersed themselves in the historical artifacts, actively participated in interactive discussions, eagerly answered questions posed by the interpreters, experienced virtual shipbuilding technology, and learned the art of tying sailor knots.

 

Perceiving China Maritime and Me is one of the series of themed social experiential activities sponsored by the China Scholarship Council. Through participation, international students gain a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of China's maritime industry, stimulating their curiosity and exploration spirit, enhancing their interest in their respective fields of study, and cultivating a sense of identification and affection towards Chinese history and culture.
