To promote traditional Chinese culture and immerse international students in the charm of the Dragon Boat Festival through the art of calligraphy, the International Education College held a cultural calligraphy experience titled “Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival with the Fragrance of Ink” on May 27, 2025.
The event began with an introduction by Wang Junying, a teacher from the International Education College, who explained the origins and traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival to the international students. Following this, under the patient guidance of Cai Zeqi, a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association and president of the Shanghai Maritime University Staff Calligraphy Association, the students learned the basics of calligraphy—including different calligraphy styles, the Four Treasures of the Study (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone), and basic writing techniques.
With soft-bristle brushes in hand, the students expressed their understanding of Dragon Boat Festival culture through their brushstrokes, writing heartfelt blessings for their friends and family on fans and cards.
Using brush and ink to convey emotion through characters, this innovative cultural activity deepened the international students' appreciation and love for traditional Chinese culture.
