On June 7, 2025, international students from Shanghai Maritime University participated in the inaugural Zhongning Plastic Industry Cup and the 4th Shanghai Universities International Students Taijiquan Friendship Tournament, offering a vibrant showcase of cultural exchange and sportsmanship. The event was held at the Baoshan Campus of Shanghai University and attracted over 160 international students from 16 universities across Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, and other neighboring regions in China. The opening ceremony featured a traditional lion dance, classical Chinese dance from West Lake, and martial arts demonstrations.
Under the expert guidance of coach Xu Haifeng, SMU international students delivered outstanding performances throughout the competition. In the group category, they won second prize, while in the individual category, they earned two first prizes, two second prizes, three third prizes, and one excellence award. With precision and mindfulness, they performed Chen-style Taijiquan and Chen-style Taiji Fan in both individual and group competitions, earning enthusiastic applause from spectators and praise from the judges.
The Taiji team is composed of eight students from Bangladesh, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Russia, and Vietnam. After the competition, team captain Azhar Abdikarim expressed her excitement, stating, “Taijiquan is not just a sport but also a way to connect with Chinese culture. This experience has been incredible, allowing us to learn more about the traditions and values of China.”
At the conclusion of the event, the judges praised the high level of skill demonstrated by all participants and encouraged them to continue practicing Taiji as a lifelong pursuit. This competition not only highlighted the talent of Shanghai Maritime University’s international students but also strengthened cross-cultural bonds, truly embodying the spirit of unity and cooperation.
