Program Description

Ø It is a specialized MSc Program in maritime affairs delivered by Sweden-based World Maritime University (WMU) in collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU)

Ø It commenced in 2005 and to date there are more than 600 graduates from 1countries.The new class ITL2027 is the 22nd intake, and it will start in May 2026 and end in July 2027.

Ø It is a full-time course taught in English by a world-class international facultyIt’s carefully designed teaching structure integrating classroom learning, fields studies and overseas studytrip.

Ø It is delivered in Shanghai, a fast growing center of global shipping and one of the most dynamic and culturally diversified cities in the world. Students from China and other countries around the world live and study to start a professional networking.

Ø The graduates of the program are welcomed in industry. Graduates take important positions as administrators and managers in well-known shipping logistics enterprises home and abroad.


Course Design

The programme is intensive and made up of 80 degree credits divided into three terms.

Team 1 Foundation Studies and Term 2 Specialization Studies are delivered in Shanghai classroom from May to December each year, and Term 3 Dissertation in the following year can be done remotely.

Foundation Studies: They are completed by students following the standard MSc programme, and provide a thorough grounding in maritime policy and the IMO system for maritime governance, as well as an introduction to the environmental, economic, and managerial aspects of the ocean.

Specialization Studies: The second term contains the following taught subjects: Accounting, Finance and Investment Appraisal, Decision Making Techniques and Risk Management in Shipping, Shipping KPI and Fleet Management, Supply Chain Management and Maritime Logistics, Globalization and Digital Transformation of MaritimeTransport.

Dissertation: All students complete a dissertation which may be based on a particular issue relating to their work in their home country or on a current or emerging maritime issue. The dissertation topic and proposal must be approved by the University, and may involve original research or be an analysis of a topic based on secondary sources.


Degree Conferred

The programme is taught entirely in English by WMU and SMU faculty, and the entry requirements, grading system and quality assurance processes are those in force at WMU. Successful graduates receive a WMU Master Degree of Science in Maritime Affairs, with a certificate signed by WMU’s Chancellor and President

Also, the master degree can be certificated by the Ministry of Education in China.


Entrance Requirements

We admits students with Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline, and those who are already established in careers in the maritime field. The Admissions Board will consider only those applicants who meet the following general entrance requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (with full transcript)
and/or
the highest grade certificate of competency for unrestricted service as Master Mariner or Chief Engineer

All applicants must submit an internationally recognized English language proficiency test. Acceptable tests include IELTS(6.0), TOEFL(80) and Duolingo(110). Other tests are accepted by the Admissions Board only under exceptional circumstances; applicants should check with the Registry in such cases.Students who have a pass in a GCE O-level or the equivalent (WAEC, CXC etc) must enclose a copy of their examination results for evaluation by the Admissions Board.
